Monkey Pox and Animal Transmission

Much like the concerns about COVID-19 and transmission to cats, the Monkey Pox virus has now been detected in dogs. Slightly more “I am Legend” vibes is the fear that the virus will be around for a long time becuase of the potential to stake out in wildlife. Let’s hope the response to Monkey Pox is better than COVID and the world doesn’t shut down.

Mentorship is an important piece of everyone’s career, even those that claim to do everything on their own. In a recent viewpoint in JAVMA, the authors suggest that the 4 Rs (reflection, recommendations, resources, and refferals) are effective tools to enhance the transition from veterinary school to clinical practice. It’s vital that new veterinarians feel support in order to advance the profession forward and reduce attrition. Everyone has a part to play in mentorship and something that could make a real difference for the the future of veterinary medicine.

General Economy Update

Not a lot to report this week on the economy. Generally, everyone seems to be more optomisitic - or at least less pessemestic about the state of things. Gas prices are still on the loooong decline, many companies are reporting positive numbers on earnings calls and the world is saying ‘maybe we can avoid a recession’. As we enter the last couple weeks of August we will start to see how the momentum from July fared on economic indicators and move into the “hold your breathe that we didn’t backslide” period.
